Michael Jackson Billie Jean

Michael Jackson Billie Jean

1) Billie Jean's budget was £50,000 whereas Beat It extended to £300,000 and Thriller became £2,000,000

2) As MTV played rock music and didn't play pop music or play music videos from black people which some people took as racist and offensive.

3) The videos has characteristics of a pop music video by including things such as lip-syncing, dance routines performance interwoven with narrative

4) The music video reflects the lyrics when it says "Then showed a photo of a baby
crying, his eyes were like mine", referring to Billie Jean's supposed baby of Micheal Jackson

5) The close up shots used helps link to the lyrics as it states" line, ‘Then showed a photo of a baby
crying, his eyes were like mine" and then there is a freeze and frame that zooms into MJ's eyes.

6) The video uses a billboard of people but also the music video itself is about when Micheal Jackson's brother's girlfriends or groupies would say they are the father of their children.

7) The music video uses the detective looking at Michael Jackson, the camera, Michael Jackson looking at the person in the bed, the person in the house downstairs who he tells to be quiet and the idea of looking could refer to how due to Micheal Jackson is in the spotlight and very famous, many people are always looking and focusing on him.

8) "a Midas-touch narrative could, in retrospect be interpreted as the beginnings of
the Messiah-complex that Jackson was criticised for later his career", this is a representation that manifests through real life and the same is in "for ‘Bad’, which depicts Jackson bidding farewell to his Ivy League school mates to head back to the mean streets of his youth, clearly highlights an ongoing identity crisis for this megastar."

1) The colour used is surreal and also feels as though it is dark and gritty , the lighting has a dark tone to it when it shows some of the people and areas having long and dark shadows which could e used to be setting up the scene and tone of the music video, Michael Jackson clothing is something that relates to theatre and musicals just like the set and the studio, the man included feels as though he is a private investigator form crime drama movies.

2) The equilibrium starts with the private investigator man following Michael Jackson, then it follows with him trying to catch Michael Jackson or follow and then it ends with him being arrested by the police.

3) Michael Jackson is compared to the homeless guy who is sleeping but is also wearing bad clothes and then he is contrasted with the detective or stalker ,with the stalker being more elusive and mysterious and Michael being ordinary and normal, Michael is also contrasted with area around  him as it is poor and urban and Michael is wearing smart and sophisticated clothes.

4) The freeze frames and screen splits not only make the video better edited and more professional but also helps the audience focus on Michael and the lyrics that he saying thus making the audience more engaged.

5) Pictures within Pictures give the music video a surreal feeling but also could relate to the fact that a fictional music video which tries its best to replicate real life through the studio talks about and tries to tackle and issue faced by his family and himself which is the fame but also sexual relations with people when you are a famous celebrity, the pictures could also relate to the media and how they want to focus and want stories like this.

6) I don't think the video refers to the idea of the Black Diaspora but it does subvert the idea of the entertainer or Jim Crow character as Michael is the entertainer but he does his dancing in a sleek and clean fashion which blends in with the area and the lyrics.

7) The video uses the repetition and difference but in the case that the detective tries to catch MJ but he fails and then he does it again and gets caught also with the light and objects illuminating when MJ touches them start to change and turn into different objects rather than staying the same.

8) The picture in picture uses the idea of post modernism by using technology such as a Polaroid camera to convey and capture that idea but also the fact that he uses the detective character who is used i old films is included in a film and instead of finding the bad guy, he tries to get MJ who is innocent in this case.
