Introduction to TV Drama

1) A serial television drama is a show with a continuous plot that unfolds  sequential episode-by-episode fashion.

2)  Doctor Who, The Avengers 1961-1969, Danger Man 1962-1968 , The Sweeney 1975-178 , Starksy and Hutch 1975-1979 , Hill Street Blues 1981-1987 Dallas 1978-1991 and 2012-2014

- Viewing in black and white to colour
- TV dramas are shot on film and made like a film with the same high quality production values
- Changing the set narrative structure and delivering a resolution at the end of each episode to running a story over several episodes before offering any closure
- Focusing on an ensemble cast rather than just one protagonist

3) Police Procedural - CSI, Border Patrol
Medical - Scrubs, House , Grey's Anatomy
Period - The Crown, Down Town Abbey
Science-fiction/fantasy - Westworld , Black Mirror

4) The setting can be used to enhance the story and also delve in things such as how the characters are feeling and also make the viewer see how the TV drama should be perceived e.g serious - Urban city, house - family drama, school - teenage and youth experiences.

5) The viewer can use the TV character in order to reflect themselves, admire or like them, feel empathetic towards which links the Uses and Gratifications theory.

6) Multi-strand narrative is  story line comprising of a beginning, middle, and end and is involved within the story.

7)  A cold opening is when producers releases a teaser at the beginning of the episode examples can be shown in the TV shows Luther and How To Get Away With Murder.

8) A state of equilibrium- when everything is as it should be, peace and harmony e.g Game of Thrones, House Stark are in Winterfell and live as a family.

Then there is a disruption of that order by an event e.g The parents and leaders of House Stark go to enemy territory in the south thus making the House weak.

A recognition that the disorder has occurred e.g The oldest son goes to rescue the rest of his family after being trapped by his enemies.

Then there is an attempt to repair the damage of the disruption e.g The family relative tries to reclaim the ancestral seat of House Stark.

A return of a new equilibrium at the end of the narrative e.g the ancestral seat is regained thus securing the future of House Stark.

9) The typical from of TV dramas tend to focus on the family issue and are broadcasted by large production companies such as ABC.

10) They've made it easier for audiences to watch their TV shows rather than wait weekly and also are able to produce good TV shows that pander and suit to the audiences wants and needs.

11) Game of Thrones

Setting: Medieval based world.

Characters: House Stark, House Lannister, House Baratheon and House Targaryen.

Narrative: The downfall and uprising of House Stark and the current affairs that are happening in Westeros and Essos.

12) Can be consumed quicker, characters are more different, they will be more progressive as they mirror what happens in society, become better as more people want to watch it and higher amounts of competition between TV production companies and broadcasting services. Will be shorter in episodes but have more seasons, famous actors and actresses will be starred, upcoming actors who need their big break will starred, more plot twist that go against conventional ones, different characters who  challenge stereotypes or uphold them.
