Coursework: Preliminary Exercise

 Coursework: Preliminary Exercise

1) Edge of Seventeen:

This films is a coming of age movie. In the trailer narrative and genre is communicated to the audience through the main character and the supporting character having a dialogue. The dialogue shows the main character discussing how she is having suicidal thoughts which she tells her teacher who is the supporting character. The genre is shown through the main character talking about her problems which fits the coming of age genre since it talks about adolescence which can be described as a tough and confusing time and the main character demonstrates that.. Also genre and narrative is shown to the audience through quick and fast shots which cutback to when each character is talking. The trailer then shows the main characters talking about different people in her school and how she ridicules them thus showing how loneliness or isolation is one of the themes of the narrative. Also, the narrative is continued to be shown as the main character narrates over the trailer thus showing the audience what the narrative is going to be about.

2) Kingsman: The Secret Service:
One of the first things shown to the audience is the location or setting which is London and then the next thing shown are a bunch of teenagers smoking a cigarette which gives the idea that movie is going to have an urban feel. Also, the next shot shown is the characters stealing a car which shows that the characters are reckless and brave. The trailer then shows the main character being chased by a police whilst a posh man narrates over thus showing the difference between lower class urban characters and upper class characters in the movie The lighting of the setting changes from night time to day time as the main character is introduced to one of the Kingsman agents which could show how the agents has had a positive influence on the main character. Also, in the trailer the posh man is shown fighting a group of men which could reverse stereotypes as a posh man wouldn't be considered as violent or a fighter whereas the men that he is fighting against (stereotypical football hooligans) would be which shows how this movie is different to most spy-movies as the main character isn't already an agent and doesn't know how to do things that spies would be considered of doing. By using clothes or what the character is wearing, the movies is able to differentiate from stereotypical spy movie villains as in this case he would be considered eccentric and weird which reverses stereotypes and movie conventions.

3) Django Unchained:

Close-ups are used at the beginning of the trailer as the character's back is shown. This shows the audience how the main character is a slave and the scars on his back shows the pain and the struggle which fills the audience in on what the character has gone through prior to this moment. There's a chains on the main character's feet showing how he is a slave and he is restricted from movement. Then there is an establishing shot of the area of where Django is showing how far away he is from civilisation. Then there is a close up of Django being freed by another one of the main characters which shows how important that character is to the story but also shows how different the character is to old white men at the time as they would have been racist and discriminatory towards Django but this character is doing the opposite and saving from his imprisonment and slavery. There is a close-up of Django shooting a gun showing how violence and death are going to be prominent themes in the film but also allows the main character achieve to his goals which would be difficult as he is a slave in the 19th century. An establishing shot is used to show the location of where Django's wife is and uses medium shot to show the owner who is the antagonist in the story.

4) Scott Pilgrim vs. the World:

Editing such as slow motion is used in the trailer in order to show the main character's nervousness and fear in the setting he is in which is a party. This shows the main characters is introverted and not used to social interactions. The camera then cuts to different parts which shows two different characters. This makes the audience became aware of the fact that Scott likes the girl and is infatuated with her. The camera then zooms in on Scott scrunching up a plastic cup which then tells the audience that Scott wants to talk to her. Another shot shown which is similar to a montage which shows Scott asking the people in the party what the identity of the girl he just spoke to. Quick editing is used to cut to the other characters to give the audience the impression that Scott Pilgrim is talking to a lot of a people.  A style of visual editing is used in the trailer and it is sometimes when a sound is heard, the word for it appears on the screen which is a distinct style of editing to make the movie feel more unique. The plot is about Scott defeating the girl's exes as they are jealous of Scott and as this is being told to the audience whilst the girl's exes is being shown on the screen which allows the audience to be filled in on the story, plot and narrative.

5) The Nun:

The trailer starts of a loud musical background which is often used in horror movies, this could be considered non-diegetic. This is also happening whilst the musical score is increasing which increase suspense, this is non-diegetic sound. A character is narrating about the Nun which is used as a way to intrigue the audience - non-diegetic sound. The next scene is a dialogue between a man and a nun discussing about the Nun. SFX are continually used throughout the trailer in order to build up tension. Also, the trailer uses a method in which the sound is cut off abruptly and then is followed with a jump scare  which then causes the sound to go up thus scaring the audience. This is used in many other horror movies and is commonly associated with the genre.

6) Taken:

The trailer has a green screen intro just like most of the trailers. The trailer also includes the names of the production companies that were involved in making and producing the films such as 20th Century Fox, this is before trailers before they play just like the ones in the shown above. The trailer just like the majority of them have a musical score in the background to amplify the scenes that are shown. The trailer then uses a change of music as the scenes or the plot changes which is shown in the majority of the trailer. At the end of the trailer it shows the title of the movie and the person who directed just like majority of the trailers and in this trailer the name of Liam Neeson appears after the title due to him being a famous and notable actor which then makes the audience more likely to watch the movie as they casted a famous actor.

Film Pitch:

1) Title: Ragged Words

2) Tagline: Some problems are harder to solve than others.

3) Genre: Coming of age

4) Logline: Every problem has a solution

5) Amateur.

6) The main character has dyslexia, major test is coming but the person who tells him how to cope and focus with it moves cross-country , making it hard for him to focus on the upcoming test so this focuses on how he tries to overcome.

7) Other characters: friend ( supporting character), instructor

8) Hero's desires: to have go to a good university and have a good job in order for him to take care of his family.

Conflict: He has dyslexia, he's tutor moves away making it harder for him to deal with it, due to him having dyslexia he never tries or uses his full potential at school.

9) Target audience: Male and Female, teenager to young adult, middle-class and upper-class.

Statement of Intent:

1) For the product, the things that I will do are to film in three locations and for narrative conflict, this will demonstrated to the audience through the main character showing complications in his education due to his dyslexia even though he wishes to achieve good grades. By using trailer conventions, it allows the viewers to know info about the film but this also makes the product seem like its something that an production company would be produce Another things trailer conventions allows is that it makes audience to be interested in the plot and allows the viewer to see a brief outline of the plot and narrative. Also I will use original photography for the film poster in order to make this product seem more real.

Furthermore, I would like the main character to understood and somewhat sympathised by the audience through understanding , empathy and comprehending although it would be hard to show dyslexia but I would like to see the audience to see it visually at one instance so the audience can understand. Also, it would be much more difficult. I would also like to show the main characters reluctance in focusing in his education or trying to reach his full potential. I would also like to introduce characters such as the friend ( main supporting character)  trying to help the friend although he doesn't want to try and showing the friend trying to fill in the shoes of the tutor which gives the main character a chance at succeeding in his goal. Also, I would like to talk about the education system and how it would be beneficial or useless to a person with learning problems. For example, how would a person with dyslexia cope with doing revision or writing notes and whether this would affect how they view school or themselves as if you can't learn on the level that students without dyslexia have, it may affect how you view yourselves. At first, this will be shown with the character in the sense that he views himself as stupid as he can't revise or learn as quickly as other students. However, the main character starts to learn other ways of revising such as learning through listening such as listening to a You Tube video which allows him to bypass his dyslexia thus solving the problem that he was facing.

I would like my character to challenge stereotypes as that makes the character much more interesting to watch and view  and makes him less likely to be one-dimensional and bland.
The audience I would like to target specifically are a young audience from the ages of 15-24 as one of the issues the product focuses on and talks about is education and those are the ages that  think that have or are aware of the "school mentality" but this also means that it could target a much older or younger audience as majority of people have indeed had experienced school and this can established through film posters or trailers.
