Deutschland 83 case study

Deutschland 83 case study

1) One of the positive aspects of Deutschland 83 that are highlighted by the reviews is the fact that is historically accurate, using songs that were popular in that time such as Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), to give it an 80's film. Also, Deutschland 83 also depict things such as the "Evil Speech" done by Erich Honecker who was the leader of East Germany and Ronald Reagan's follow back speech further illustrates the historical and political accurateness of the time Deutschland 83 was set in thus improving the viewers immersion.

Reviews also highlight that Deutschland 83 "is a serious thriller driven by jeopardy of the all-out nuclear kind", which shows  Deutschland 83 portrayed the time the TV shows was set in accurately as is it demonstrates the divide and difference between two different sides but also the inherent fear of an all-out war and the on-coming fear of an apocalypse started by the use of the nuclear weapons.

2) One of the criticisms made by the show is that it is a drama but there aren't a lot of drama scenes included in the series.

3) The Telegraph stated that due to the TV show because it was very detailed and portrays the time period accurately.

4) "It was watchable and different but full of holes and implausibility's."

I do not agree this quote because I found it out to be watchable.

"It was silly but no more so than acclaimed American shows like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones"

In my opinion the TV show can't be compared to TV shows like Breaking Bad as it has different things such as genre and the budget would be much more lower thus restricting the content and the potential that the TV show can reach.

"It was ultimately quite poor I thought."

I disagree with this statement as the TV show had good reviews.

Jonas Navy Interview:

1) Jonas states that there was a freedom in growing up in a united Germany. He further states that it was easier to travel different places in Germany as there wasn't a wall restricting different areas.

2) This makes it easier for the audience to understand the what Jonas Navy is saying but also makes it easier German audiences to understand what he is due to the TV show being based there and but also to attract some viewers from that region as well.

3) This might attract the Channel 4 news audience as there are interested in news and political things which the interviewer included in the interview. This also allows another audience to be interested in the TV shows because the Channel 4 audience might not be interested in TV shows which could allow them to be interested in the TV show as it covers a real life event and a infamous time period.

Behind the scenes clips:

1) The clip shows the things that the audience could be interest such as the action and the drama scenes. The fact that it can be interesting to any demographic, old or young.

2) History is an important aspect on the appeal of the TV show as it covers a time period that was intense and could have caused the World War 3 thus making the audience interested as they would want to know the real events that happened which prevented all-out war with nuclear weapons. Also, it allows the viewer to see the things that were native to that time period such as the music, style of clothes and technology.

3) Things such as cinematography and the archive footage included in the TV series.

1) Things like the set design, costume and the props are important for the TV series as it helps it make it seem more historical accurate thus making it seem more realistically for that time period and also makes it engaging for the audience to watch as a TV series. The props can help achieve this as they could use things such as technology that is pertaining for that time period such as bulky computers and TV's.

2) As far as I know, the TV shows seems to be present the 80's accurately, this is due to the props and costumes seeming as if they are from the 80's instead of today.

3) The music , props and costumes are audience pleasures as it shows them things that existed in the 80's which the audience would find interesting. Furthermore, it allows the viewer to see and understand references or events that they've seen happened or occurred in the 80's.

Textual analysis:

1) The opening of the trailer uses a quote narrated by Ronald Reagan, that sets up a subtle theme in the TV series but also creates a mysterious tone that makes the viewer question the trailer thus making them more engaged. The editing shows the duality of the East and West of Germany and what each side makes the protagonist into thus making the viewer see what the premise of TV show, giving them an idea but doesn't give too much details about the narrative of the TV series which would make the viewer disinterested.

2) The trailer shows the protagonist on both sides of the wall and what his role is in each one thus making the viewer see what his job but the viewer would want to see how he got to the position the protagonist is in

3) The trailer shows a scene in the trailer that would make the viewer interested but the viewer would need to watch the TV show to know what the cause is and to uncover the mystery that was set-up by the trailer.

4) The protagonist running being chased by something, him in engaging in sexual acts, guns being used which are all stereotypes in spy-drama which are reinforced by spy movies such as James Bond.

5) The technology used such as headphones, clothes and objects such as cars that capture the 1983 scene as they are things that are relative to that time period and not today e.g a car, a piece of technology, style of clothing.

6) Due to it being a song that is known for being released in the 80's further making the TV show seem as though it is really set in that time period but also the song itself tackles the theme of war and nuclear warfare just like the TV show.

7) As it may not have suited the trailer but also makes it harder to understand the speech by Ronald Reagan if another language was played over it such as German.

Production and industry:

1) "Deutschland 83 is a suspenseful coming-of-age story set against the real culture wars and political events of Germany in the 1980s. The drama follows Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay) as the 24 year-old East Germany native is pulled from the world as he knows it and sent to the West as an undercover spy for the Stasi foreign service. Hiding in plain sight in the West German army, he must gather the secrets of NATO military strategy. Everything is new, nothing is quite what it seems and everyone he encounters is harbouring secrets, both political and personal."

2) "Set against the real events, culture wars and political realities of Germany in the 1980s, Deutschland 83 is a stylish coming of age story, framed within a suspenseful thriller. Season 1 culminates with the true story of a nuclear stand-off in late 1983, caused by a NATO war game and botched intelligence on the East German side."

3) As it shows parts of the TV series which promotes the TV series as it allows other people to see it thus making them more interested.

Walter Presents:

1) By using a lot of editing, scenes and sequences.

2) Younger adults to Middle-aged.

3) As it shows a clip on the internet promoting a series being broadcasted on TV

Marketing and Promotion:

1) "stylish, fast-paced and utterly gripping, the series, created by German-American husband and wife team Anna Winger and Joerg Winger, reveals the experiences of Germans from both sides of the Berlin wall during a pivotal period of Cold War tensions where the world’s nuclear arsenals rested on a hair trigger.

The series was the first German-language drama ever to air in the US, proving a hit on SundanceTV channel this summer where it has was hailed as “engrossing” (Time Magazine), “slick” (The Hollywood Reporter) and “fresh and enjoyable” (The New York Times)."
2)  The TV series main strengths are the fact it is "stylish, fast-paced and utterly gripping" which would make viewers more interested and engaged in watching and continuing with the TV show.
3) "My idea was to tell a story form the point of view of the mole. At the time of the fall of the Wall there were more than 2000 Stasi agents undercover in West Germany. In recent years, there have been some movies about the 1980s in East Germany but few about the West, so I liked idea of seeing it all through the eyes of someone who has never been there before. Our main character, Martin/Moritz, is a kind of an Alice in Wonderland."
4) The soundtrack might attract the audience as some of the songs are from the 80's and tackle the same issues as the TV show.

International Marketing:
1) The poster communicates sub genres to the viewer by showing things like what the character is wearing but also what he has such as headphones which shows things like that are prominent or important to the story and also indicate the sub-genre which could be espionage.
2) The mise en scene communicates to the viewer that the character seems happy or in a state of new found freedom which can be shown by the protagonist's facial expressions but it is also helped by the poster's colouring.
3) The American poster uses things like a bold font to show the seriousness and severity that the TV show covers. The graphics also make it seem as though it is a poster from the 80's.  The colour catches the viewers attentions as they are bright colours.
4) As different countries might be attracted to different things, the American poster looks like a movie poster and America is well-know for its movies and amount of movies that are watched and released. Whereas, the UK poster is seems more like a TV show and is less vocal and interesting than the American poster.
