Capital Case Study

Capital Case Study

Textual Analysis:

1) The camera work cuts back to the characters having a happy expression their face to convey that the community is a good place in which people have a sense of closeness however as the trailer progresses the camera work changes to show some of the characters being angry and enraged which also shows how people struggle and go through hard times.

2) In the beginning of the trailer, it shows character going on with their ordinary lives and also shows them to be happy and content.

3) One of the ways the trailer convey the family element of the drama is when the characters give each other a post card which shows their closeness and also shows they wish to disclose information to the ones that they care about.

4) "These Streets" is a song that talks about things such as overcoming difficulty together and shared identity which are themes that are prominent in the TV show.

5) At first the community seem happy but this is disrupted when they find out that there are post cards that are being mailed which invades their privacy, this is an enigma code as audiences want to find out the identity of who is behind the post cards thus making audiences want to watch so that this is revealed.

1) The clips shows things such as the post cards and how they are invading the families privacy but also shows a theme of religion and how that causes authority figures to treat them differently due to them which is shown when one of the characters states, " it was sent three weeks ago".

2) By including things that people can recognise things such as a corner shop.

3) By using things such as colloquial language and locations such as a corner shop.

4) Some of the audience pleasures that are provided in this scene that the identity of the person behind the post card is closer to being found which is shown by the help of the detective and using some comedy in scene and also showing why it is taking a long time for police intervention.

5) The audience probably feel annoyed that it took the police to respond which is shown when on the characters mentioned that it took them 3 weeks to respond.

1) At first, the clip shows upper-middle class as peaceful and harmonistic and one of the things showing this is the literal birds tweeting. This is further expressed as everything seems to be in order, the kids are eating and the nanny and husband seem to get along with each other however this is disrupted by the wife when she enters which also shows how upper-middle class can also have problems and under-go conflicts.

2) The wife and husband seemed to have split temporarily and the husband has hired a nanny to look after the children since he doesn't have the time due to his job and the fact he doesn't know how to look after them.

3) The banker and the two boys show the audience how close they are which is shown by how they sing The Wheels on The Bus which makes the audience feels happy.

Production:

1) Shine Limited.

2) Spooks.

3) Broadchurch, The Tunnel, Humans. Peabody award for Broadchurch, Television Bulldog Award for Best Indie.

4) Shows similar to Capital such as Broadchurch.

Marketing:

1) One of the ways the programme information makes Capital sound interesting for the audience is by showing how critically acclaimed some of the actors that are starring in the show. Also by using questions to make the TV show seem suspenseful and interesting.

2) To show that the other TV shows made by the director were critically acclaimed and if those were good, the same can be considered for Capital as well.

3) It was commissioned by Charlotte Moore and Ben Stephenson who both hold high positions in the BBC.

4) That Roger isn’t an evil banker, he’s a slightly complacent banker. He’s become used to a certain way of life and has a self-imposed pressure to live that way. He spends a lot of money on things that other people don’t spend money on – for example fixtures and fittings - but that is normal to him and his wife. He is not totally in charge of his life or his work.

5) "I don’t really have specific scenes but Ahmed is behind the counter in the shop a lot, serving the community, and I like that revolving door feeling, of different people coming in and out.  Whenever the door opened, it was always someone new. I’m going to go away and pay more attention to people on my street, people in the corner shop, and maybe say “hello, how are you?”, to the person behind the counter".

6) " I think so. If you look at the subject of Capital, and the number of communities that are being represented, there’s awareness that the world is shrinking, and becoming a global village. We are absorbing cultures, and understanding them, or at least trying to understand them within their own paradigms".

7) " I have a few favourite moments in the book which I wanted to make sure stayed as favourites in the adaptation. Christmas morning where Roger has been abandoned and left to look after his two children is one that Euros (Director) has done brilliantly. Roger realises that his life is changing but it’s done with such comedy! It is one of those glorious Basil Fawlty moments where the farce is working at one level and the emotional farce is working at another".

8) " It definitely speaks to me about where London and the country is now. The obsession with property, the fact that London house prices have risen extraordinarily, has only intensified the sense of a society of haves and have-nots".
