Marxism and Hegemony
Marxism and Hegemony
1) The Left is the radical, reforming, or socialist section of a political party or system. Some of the suggested left wing ideologies promoted by Capital, the Muslim brother who is released and not being associated to terrorism, the illegal women who is capable of working , the banker and his wife are represented as bad and his wife is represented as insufferable and the the Polish man and his wife being compared to Mother Teresa.
2) "the ghastly Roger and Arabella (Toby Jones and Rachael Stirling) went through the same long-drawn-out charade, bidding the rooms of their house goodbye." This quote is true to an extent as the scenes with Roger and Arabella mostly seemed to be them arguing with each other and also leads to their splitting up in on of the the episodes. "Capital started with an intriguing idea: some unknown anarchist was posting ominous cards through the doors in a gentrified London street... But that concept went nowhere." I agree with this quote as it seemed as though the stalker was a problem but this wasn't portrayed well due to the reactions of the residents of the street. "The hardest worker on the street was an illegal immigrant", I disagree with this quote as the African woman was hard-working but it could be argued that Roger was a hard worker as he earned his company lots of money.
3) The scene in which the detective questions the Pakistani family in which one of the brothers says that it took them three weeks to respond which could link to promoting left-wing ideology as it shows the detective or the police don't value their safety as someone else due to their ethnicity or religion.
4) One of the examples that reinforce the status quo in Capitalist London is the first episode in which we see Roger going to his work place in central London and the majority of his colleague being majority white males and also when Roger's bonus is reduced to being possibly 2 million down to 30,000 which reinforces the idea of bankers as greedy.
The Casual Vacancy:
1) One of the reasons why Daily Mail suggest that Casual Vacancy promote left-wing ideology is that it ridicules the wealthier and shames them for their plot to sell off the local food bank and rehab centre that is Sweetlove House

2) The article suggest that characters, narrative and setting are used to promote a left-wing ideology. One of the examples shown are Barry Fairbrother in which it illustrates the idea that it is the responsibility of the state to rehabilitate drug addicts and to offer help and assistance to those in need.
3) "T
he relationship between
the BBC and J. K. Rowling,
pointing out that Danny Cohen, BBC Director of Television, is also a director of Rowling’s charity Lumos." this could show the reason why the BBC produced Casual Vacancy which was due to the relationship between Rowling and Cohen rather than the BBC producing the novel because of it being a good source material which could creates the idea that the BBC makes TV shows based on the relations of the people behind it.
4) The idea of hegemony can be promoted through the BBC as it is one of the most watched and prominent TV shows in the UK. Due to its wide audience spanning most of the country it can reach a lot of people and garner millions of views, this makes it easier or likely for people's mindset to be impacted because if more people watch or aware of something it causes people to act or have the same opinion as them because they don't want to be seen as outsiders making it easier to control people as not a lot of people are going to disagree with the view of the dominant class and if they did, their opinion wouldn't be cared about because they're a small amount and can't oppose the majority.
